Simplifying IT Process: Improving IT Value. A truly visionary change agent is introspective enough to question assumption to build a better business system.
Somewhere while traversing the journey of our legacy, we got off balance-- we embraced our complexity and ability to function in such a higher demand that we came to believe that our VALUE was in our indiscernable processes. You can't get rid of me, yes I am dysfunctional, and if you don't understand me-- whether you like me or not, you still need me.
CHANGE MANAGEMENT IS CRITICAL:
70-80-% of interruptions are directly caused by uncontrolled changes being made
SYMPTOMS OF OFF BALANCED CHANGE CONTROL:
1. Change is under architected resulting in hastily made changes- initiated too hastily with insufficient preparedness and 'redone' to fit the real organizational dynamics.
2. Change is over architected resulting in a cat herding exercise where decisions never seem to get off the ground, suffering a sort of 'paralysis of analysis' exercise on the fundamental activities, and compromising the quality of decision by trying to do too much with too many people with too few decisions.
Gantthead frequently runs articles that catch my eye- the kind of headline that you have to dive in for and see if it holds that silver bullet idea, too perfect to pass up. This article, Simplifying IT Governance, by Michael Wood was no exception.
IT CHANGE AGENT TIP ONE:
DON'T BE HYPNOTIZED BY VISIO PROCESS FLOWS: A PICTURE DOES NOT A PERFECT PROCESS MAKE-- BUT IT DOES MAKE A NICE ILLUSTRATION FOR DISCUSSION.
'Baked' to perfection, process is not an entity unto itself, and must begin with the objective end in mind. Steven Covey's Habit 2 of 'Seven Habits of Highly Effective People' extends to process as well. If all solutions are created first mentally and then physically-- and the mental part is taking place in several people's minds, how to simplify the process to deliver what Michael Wood refers to in his IT Change Agent Tip...
IT CHANGE AGENT TIP TWO:
'SECURE- TIMELY- ACCURATE- APPROPRIATE - RELEVANT'
I agree with the notion Michael Wood presents that “The primary goals for information technology governance are to (1) assure that the investments in IT generate business value, and (2) mitigate the risks that are associated with IT. This can be done by implementing an organizational structure with well-defined roles for the responsibility of information, business processes, applications, infrastructure, etc.”
IT CHANGE AGENT TIP THREE:
'MAP THE ORG STRUCTURE, ROLES, DECISION RESPONSIBILITIES FOR PROCESS, APPLICATION, CONTROL, DEPENDENCIES OF INFRASTRUCTURE. IF ALL PARTICIPANTS ARE ALIGNED TO THE SAME AIM, OBJECTIVES and TIMELINES, there is LESS CAT HERDING, and a better level of Discussion.
