Jobs and Social Media: Because I am a Professional, Friend

December 12, 2013:  "Dawn, you work in IT don't you?  I don't understand..  Why do you help people find jobs?"   ~ asked my friend

My answer: "Yes I work in Information Technology and left recruiting several years ago. You are correct I am no longer in recruiting, and I don't get paid for it.  I suppose its a valid question.  But there is more to it than that.

Who do I think I am?   I am a professional who believes win win social networking creates opportunity, prosperity and well being.  I am generously compensated for my work in Information Technology. But let's be honest, last few years have been tough.  I faced tough times, and it was social media that connected me to my last 3 great jobs. I had to be highly flexible and had to move alot, but who I am moved with me.

Who I am is consistent.  I am a professional, whether in Marketing, IT, Recruiting, Parenting, or Social Philanthropy.  I am a good friend and want to celebrate and contribute to the supportive well being of those I love or respect.   I want to bring my best self to my work and my friendships.  I built a solid foundation social network that can weather the tides of all times.  People matter-- in all times, theirs and your hard times or good.

My friends are highly productive, caring, professionals who work hard
  • 2 weeks before Christmas, waiting to bring family together, he is notified his job will end, this month
  • Battling cancer, she's seeking a job that allows telecommuting on chemo days provided work is done
  • Husband is overseas in active duty Army, can't feed family unless she gets a better paying job soon
  • If she gets a job, she won't be homeless. Its harder to find work with no address or phone number
  • After divorce I was left with nothing because of layoff, my ex said I deserved nothing, and got it
I am highly connected to people who also believe in win win social networking.  Help one another out by talking about the good and providing ideas that turn challenges into opportunity.   So when my recruiter friends who are looking to place good people in jobs, can take my referral and turn it into a placement, they win by placing a good person, my friend wins by being connected to their next job, and I get to see them shine.  My friends are highly productive and good at what they do. We are ALL better for looking out for. one another.

If you have a friend who does a good job, endorse them, refer them, and celebrate them.
If you have a friend seeking work, and you have another friend looking to hire them, connect them, and celebrate them.

I hear in the news about the shortage of talent, and then I look across my network of business professionals and say, "NOT here, NOT now".  Many companies offer referral bonuses for referring talent, so  in fact referring someone you know for a job at your company, for a job they could rock, is good for you as well.

In an environment where a referral could result in a friend working, landing a new contract, filling a challenging client need, and prospering their business, the question is not really why do "I" help my friends find jobs, the question is "why don't YOU help your friends with business or job referrals?"

We can make a difference.  Connected Caring Counts..  Who are you going to enlighten, enrich and empower?  Its our choice to be our best professional.  To whom much is given, much is also expected.
